The Kangaroo Method and Restorative Homeodynamic Environments

The Kangaroo Care (KC) method is a well-established strategy for humanized neonatal care. However, the literature focuses primarily on its clinical outcomes and devotes less attention to the maternal experience in the hospital setting. This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and analyzed publications from 2021 to 2024 to understand the benefits of the KC and examine how the literature addresses the maternal experience, family involvement, and the hospital environment. A total of 64 review articles were identified in the Scopus, Web of Science, SAGE Journals, and SciELO databases. The synthesis confirms neurophysiological, behavioral, emotional, and relational benefits but reveals limited attention to the physical, sensory, and spatial conditions of care. Ergonomic discomfort, lack of privacy, noise, intense lighting, and insufficient institutional support hinder skin-to-skin contact. Interpreted in light of Evidence-Based Design, Experience-Based Design, and Restorative Homeodynamic Environments, the findings highlight the maternal and family experience as a source of evidence for design decisions in Kangaroo Care Units.
