Abstract

This article analyzes the concept of presence within the context of Augmented Reality (AR), with emphasis on the aesthetic and affective experience enabled by interaction with virtual beings/objects. Based on a transdisciplinary approach that integrates contributions from phenomenology, semiotics, and socio-technological studies, it is argued that attention constitutes the central axis of presence, shifting the focus from the physical body to the subject’s attentive engagement. Conceptual distinctions between physical presence, telepresence, and virtual presence are discussed, taking into account their implications for communication practices in mixed and digital environments. Finally, the article proposes a set of attributes to enhance the sense of presence in AR experiences.
